When we lived in our house, we had backup heat/cooking, deep cycle batts, 2 large solar panels, homebrew generator. Call me a target, but when we lost power a couple of times, we were the only house for a few blocks with power. No street lights, no business lights, very weird feeling being the only one lit up.
Since we moved into an ALL ELECTRIC apartment... I dropped the backup heater, but opted for having a fireplace for heating and/or cooking, as well as, bbq grill for cooking if needed. A couple of smaller solar panels and batts. I'm in the market for one of those mini generators, but the Jeep will do in a pinch. Downsized... but still effective.
Last time we lost power for the night... my two small batteries were running Mrs.SoToo's Nintendo DS and small electric oscillating fan, Mr.Shit's Nintendo GBA, a 14W fluorescent bulb (rated at 60W equivalent light output), and I was watching the portable DVR... ALL at the same time for about 3 hrs, minus the bulb for a couple more hours, then we went to bed and just her fan and the DVR player ran a couple more hours after I fell asleep, while the game systems were still charging. The next day, the solar panels brought the batts back up to full charge in short order.
If the cable was working, I know I could have powered that or even the larger game sytems through the DVR.
Yep... I downsized, but I'm confident I can get shit done, and I'm still tweaking it!
Ice storms can knock out power here for short periods of time, but in 1989, a severe ice storm knocked out power for a few weeks... several folks, especially those running all electric, really suffered. Not me or mine, buddy. My stuff don't take up much room, and was not very expensive. There's really no reason (read excuse) to go without being prepared!
